Recently Providence Farms has ventured into cold pressing seeds for oil.

Cold pressing is oil extraction without solvents or chemicals, and only temperatures below 104°F are used. By removing the heat, the oil that is produced undergoes less damage. When oil is extracted at high heats, it can be damaging to the chemical structure of the oil, making it spoil sooner. Also, cold pressing allows for the healthy fats to remain intact, which provides a pure, healthy form of oil. Research has shown that cold pressed oils are an important component of the human diet because of their polyunsaturated fatty acid and linoleic acid levels. Polyunsaturated fatty acids and linoleic acids contain essential fatty acids needed for the human diet.

Currently, we press safflower and sunflower seeds and will be expanding to include flaxseed and canola oil. Some of the health benefits of these oils are:

Safflower oil possesses high levels of oleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid. This is good for heart health and blood sugar levels. It also contains linolenic acid, which can reduce bloating. Safflower oil can be used as a moisturizer and helps in hair growth and softening. Some studies have shown that it is also able to boost production of adiponectin, a hormone associated with fat metabolism.

Sunflower oil is filled with linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, which aids in various health conditions. After opening, it has a shelf life of about six months when refrigerated. It has shown to help eliminate acne causing bacteria. Also, it has been recommended for use on those with immunity sensitive skin as it helps create a barrier between the skin and bacteria. Some have applied it to poorly healing wounds to aid in the healing.

Flaxseed oil has high levels of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid, good for heart health and decreasing inflammation. It has been noted to help with constipation. Also, it is used as an aid in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and high cholesterol. It is advised to take while hydrated or with water.

Canola oil contains oleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid at high levels good for blood sugar levels and heart health. It is also cholesterol lowering and helps to lower blood pressure. Being low in saturated fat and high proportioned monounsaturated fat, canola oil maintains its status as healthy oil.

All four oils show low levels of saturated fat and levels of vitamin E beneficial to general well being.
